How to Set Up a New VPN¶
Overview¶
You need a Party VPN account for creating and managing your VPNs. You can create your Party VPN account for free here. We only ask for your name and email (for notifications), and you can sign up in less than 10 seconds.
Prerequisites¶
Before you begin, make sure you:
- Have an active and verified Party VPN account or Sign up
- Login to the dashboard
- Have sufficient credits/balance for VPN creation
Configuration Tool¶
Let's start configuring your VPN from the Party VPN dashboard
- Click My VPNs from the left sidebar
- Click Create my First VPN on the main screen
VPN Details¶
Name¶
Optional
You can give your VPN a friendly name to help identify it later, such as "Desktop", "iPhone", or "Travel VPN"
Location¶
Choose from our available VPN server locations. This location will determine where you "appear" to be when you're connected to the VPN. Servers that are closer to where you are will be faster for you.
Server Types
-
Public Servers
- Available to all users
-
Private Servers
- Exclusive access through group membership, highlighted with a golden background and lock icon. For now, private servers are available on an invite-only basis.
Protocol¶
Optional
This step is completely option and may be skipped
VPN Protocol
Some servers support more than one VPN protocol. You can choose which one fits your needs. This is completely optional. If you don't know which one to pick, just leave it alone.
If your selected location supports multiple VPN protocols, an "Advanced Parameters" section will appear. Here you can choose among the server's available VPN protocols.
-
AmneziaWG
- The recommended default
- Enhanced censorship resistance
- Better for restrictive networks
- Based on WireGuard with additional obfuscation
-
WireGuard
- Fast and lightweight protocol
- Excellent performance
- Industry-standard encryption
When to Use Each Protocol
- Use AmneziaWG if you're in a country with Internet restrictions or need to circumvent censorship
- Use WireGuard for standard VPN usage with optimal performance
In general, which VPN protocol works best in a given situation can depend on many factors. If one doesn't work, it may be necessary to try another. We've found that only through experimentation can you find which is best for you.
Create Your VPN¶
- Review your selections
- Click the Create VPN button
VPN creation takes only a few seconds. You can create as many VPNs as you like, for as many devices as you need.
One VPN per device
Do not share your VPN configuration or QR code with multiple devices. Make a new VPN for each device, otherwise they will conflict and you will have problems.
Configure Your Device¶
After creation, you'll see the VPN Configuration page with a QR code (redacted in our screenshot) and button to download your VPN configuration.
-
QR Code
- A large QR code is displayed for easy mobile setup
-
Download Config
- If you are accessing this screen from your phone, you obviously can't scan the QR code; therefore, you need this button.
- Click or tap this button to save your VPN configuration
- You will import this config into WireGuard or AmneziaWG (see below)
For Mobile Devices¶
For iOS and Android
-
Install the VPN App
We provide the most up-to-date app badges and download links directly from the VPN Configuration page above, but you can also refer to the links below.
- For WireGuard: Download from App Store or Google Play
- For AmneziaWG: Download from App Store or Google Play
-
Import Configuration
-
If on your phone
Tap Download Config, then open the VPN app and select "Import from file or archive"
-
If viewing on another device
Open the VPN app and use the "Add tunnel from QR code" option to scan the displayed QR code
-
-
Activate Connection
- In the VPN app, toggle the connection switch to ON
- You should see "Connected" or "Active" status
For Desktop/Laptop¶
-
Install the WireGuard or AmneziaWG application for your operating system
-
WireGuard
-
AmneziaWG
- MacOS
- Windows - Click on the Windows installers on GitHub
- Linux - Best option is to use the DKMS kernel module package from your distribution; otherwise, there is a userland implementation on GitHub
-
-
Import the configuration file into your VPN application
- Activate the VPN connection

Tips and Best Practices¶
Naming Convention¶
Tip
Use descriptive names that indicate the VPN's purpose or device, such as
- iPhone
- Work Laptop
- TV
Private Servers¶
If you have access to private servers (golden cards with lock icons), these offer exclusive capacity, unique censorship-resistance and are not shared with many other customers.
Multiple Devices¶
You should create different VPNs for different devices. Each VPN gets its own unique configuration and IP address.
One VPN per device
Do not share your VPN configuration or QR code with anyone or even other devices. Make a new VPN for each device, otherwise they will conflict and you will have problems.
Configuration File Safety¶
Don't share with others
The configuration file and QR code contain sensitive information. Don't share them with others.
Troubleshooting¶
I'm using my phone, so I can't scan the QR code
Use the Download Config option explained in this article
I still can't scan the QR code
- Ensure you're using the correct app (WireGuard for WireGuard VPNs, AmneziaWG for AmneziaWG VPNs)
- Try increasing screen brightness so your phone camera sees the QR code more clearly
- Move your phone either closer, or farther away, from the QR code
- Use the Download Config option instead
I get an error: "Insufficient credits. You need at least 1 credit to create a VPN."
Your account balance is too low. Click the round crypto icon next to your account balance to top it up.
I get an error: "No VPN locations are currently available"
All servers may be at capacity or under maintenance. Try again later or contact support.
I can't see private server locations
Private servers require group membership and are not available to the general public.
